Breathing and Relaxing

LeBron James takes three slow, deep breaths at the free throw line before the ball leaves his hands for the net. He then stops, focuses intently on the net, and visualizes him making his shot successfully. It's a clean shot.

Likewise, the classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, clenches and releases his fists and rolls his shoulders before striking a string in order to release the tension in his body and devote all his abilities to playing a skillful piece.

Though these actions may seem trivial, they will help in your endeavour to living "anxiety-free":

  1. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth (unless suggested not to due to medical reasons). If you cannot breathe through your nose, do all the breathing through the mouth.
  2. Breathe in slowly as you imagine the word "Serene, " stretching the word as you inhale.
  3. Pause for three seconds.
  4.  Exhale slowly as you imagine the word "Mind, " stretching the word for as long as you breathe out.
  5. Rest for another count of three.
  6. Repeat these steps for 10-15 minutes total or until experiencing relief.
